Supporting Latin@ Victims and Survivors

Latin@ Community Response Wheels and Resources

Engaging Latin@ Faith Leaders and Communities to Address Domestic Violence

A Guide for Advocates and Service Providers

In partnership with advocates and service provider agencies, faith leaders can become sources of support for survivors of abuse, and congregations can truly become “safe havens” that provide  resources, referrals, and much-needed support.

The first step in building these partnerships between faith leaders and service providers is to reach out, develop a human connection, and find common ground. This guide, created in partnership between Safe Havens and Esperanza United, outlines different ways that advocates and faith providers can begin their journey to connection and collaboration with Latin@ faith communities. When advocates and faith leaders work together, we can make faith as much a resource, and as little a barrier, as possible.

Listening Circles

With Latin@ Faith Leaders and Community Members
September 21 to 22 and December 2 to 3, 2020

Safe Havens and Esperanza United have received many requests from Spanish-speaking faith communities for resources and training about domestic violence. We have partnered for over 4 years to respond to these requests, and one result is that a variety of our resources are available in Spanish. In 2020, we conducted two Listening Circles with Latin@ faith leaders and community members about faith and domestic violence. The Listening Circles provide a forum to talk about the strengths and needs of Latin@ faith communities, to learn more about how best to engage their strengths and meet the identified needs, and to explore whether an Esperanza United/Safe Havens partnership could provide culturally responsive resources to meet those needs. We have learned so much! With many thanks to all our participants, we are delighted to share with you a summary of our Listening Circle learnings here!
