Welcome to Safe Havens

In 1984, Anne Marie Hunter was working in a domestic violence services agency in Boston. Woman after woman spoke of their faith and their response to the violence. One woman said, “I told my pastor 27 years ago about the violence. He told me to pray harder. Now I have calluses on my knees and he still beats me.” Another woman said, “I turned the other cheek, and turned the other cheek, until I ran out of faces.” Safe Havens was founded in 1991 for all the people who have “run out of faces."

Safe Havens is a small grassroots not-for-profit agency with a big mission: to empower faith communities and leaders through education, advocacy, and resources to respond to victims of abuse and their families. Safe Havens also builds bridges between faith communities and domestic violence service providers to support a coherent community-wide response, and works to build an interfaith movement to end violence in the home.

Safe Havens… because no one should have to choose between faith and safety.
